The NW MTL programme is based upon the MTL National Framework The MTL takes place in the classroom, in school, in real time. It will draw on what is known about the conditions for effective professional learning for the teacher – support and professional challenge from a coach, expert input and opportunities to improve teaching through learning from and with others. The MTL has three phases:

The MTL also has four content areas which are specifically covered in phase 2 but underpin study throughout the programme:

Teaching and Learning Strategy
You will be supported by trained in-school coaches. The MTL trained coach is an experienced teacher who will provide you with professional consultations and critical appraisal of your professional practice in relation to Professional Standards for Teachers and the MTL programme learning activities and assignments. The coach will also provide general support and advice in relation to the programme and assist you in networking within and beyond the school. You will also be supported by academic tutors from the University. The academic tutor will help you to develop information fluency, critical thinking and academic writing to support their Masters Level work.
Learning activities will include a mix of strategies combining elements such as HEI tutor and school coach input, group discussions and learning conversations through the use of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), action research/work related enquiries, workshops, presentations, practical tasks, individual tutorials and focused work-based practice, as appropriate for each individual module and phase. Learning activities are designed to encourage critical engagement with literature, theory and research and analysis of and reflection on professional practice
Although the Masters in Teaching and Learning is essentially a practice based Masters Degree there will be opportunities to attend cluster groups, tutorials and workshops.
Your personalised pathway will be negotiated between you, your coach and HEI tutor and expressed in a learning contract that is used as a basis for planning your professional development. This process will be aligned with performance management and will be monitored by the coach and tutor to ensure progress with regard to your developing strengths, specialisms and areas for development.
Assessment Strategy:
The MTL is a pass/fail award. MTL assessments are driven by the innovative nature of the Masters in Teaching and Learning and draw upon the three elements below:
The assessments within the programme are generally designed to focus on a work-based product or process that is part of your normal work and development and is integral to a range of professional practice. You will produce a critical commentary through writing or another presentational format that includes engagement with, evaluation and application of relevant literature and theory. The critical commentary will report on a small-scale empirical investigation with clear conclusions leading from a systematic collection and analysis of data or it will develop a conceptual argument in relation to your developing practice.
